How many rotis can a diabetic eat?

Typically 1–2 millet rotis per meal, or one small katori of rice — not both. Exact count depends on your calories, activity, and sugar targets. Lunch can take 1–2 bajra, jowar, or ragi rotis. Dinner: prefer roti, drop rice.

That rule is already on the 7-day Indian diabetes diet chart. Food sits next to your medicine. It does not replace it.

Why the count matters more than the grain name

Roti is not the enemy. Four rotis with a spoon of sabzi is. Half the plate vegetables, one-quarter protein, one-quarter carbs. Salad or kachumber before the roti. Fibre first, grain second.

Two bajra rotis next to methi dal is a thali. Four wheat rotis and a smear of sabzi is a sugar load with decoration.

White rice as the whole plate is what to drop, not roti as a food. If lunch is rice, skip the roti. If lunch is roti, skip the rice. Never both.

Same table. Different load. Eat the salad and dal first. Then the roti. That order cuts the spike from the grain.

If you are hungrier on a workday, add sabzi and dal, not a third and fourth roti. The karela and methi are already doing work on this plate. Let them.

How Plate.fit fits

Plate.fit is a personalised Indian diet chart app for PCOS, Type 2 diabetes, and thyroid. It sets the roti number from what you enter in your profile. Scan a thali if you lost count of the rotis.

Are wheat rotis worse than millet rotis for diabetes?

Yes, as the everyday default — bajra, jowar, or ragi roti is the easier pick than wheat.

Wheat roti is not banned. The count still stays at 1–2, and the rest of the plate still has to be dal and sabzi. Millet rotis are lower-GI and easier to stop at two. If bajra is not in the house tonight, one or two phulkas with a loaded sabzi is still a meal. Maida is the one to drop.

Can a diabetic eat roti and rice in the same meal?

No. Pick 1–2 millet rotis or one small katori of rice — not both.

A roti plus a katori of rice is two carb quarters. The plate method has room for one. If the cook served both, eat the dal and sabzi, keep one grain, and leave the other. Biryani, khichdi, and a side of roti is the same trap with a different name.

How many rotis at dinner for a diabetic?

Typically one millet roti at dinner, not two, and drop rice.

Dinner is the quieter plate. A second pile of rice at night is how the fasting number moves the wrong way. One jowar or ragi roti with sabzi, dal, and curd is enough for most evenings. Some nights the sample chart uses paneer or grilled protein with salad and no roti. That is still a meal.
